We can’t talk STYLE without mentioning one of the most stylish designers of all time – Balenciaga. His name is synonymous with mystique and elegance.
In Couture Culture: The Master of Us All, A New Biography of Balenciaga, Mary Blume takes us back to the era of the famous designer, with the book transcending the 40 years since Balenciaga’s passing.
Cristóbal Balenciaga is to thank for many of fashion’s long lasting trends; the sack dress, the bracelet sleeve, and the pillbox hat, amongst others. He taught fashion design classes, inspiring other designers such as Oscar de la Renta, André Courrèges, Emanuel Ungaro, Mila Schön and Hubert de Givenchy. Today, the Balenciaga fashion house continues under the direction of Alexander Wang and under the ownership of the Gucci Group
Blume paints a vivid picture of the reclusive designer by inviting us into his personal life. He had a love and obsession with fashion but also a penchant for skiing. He was very shy, and close to the Spanish royal family, who wore his designs until WWII forced him to move to Paris.
His name and designs are the epitome of haute couture. To read more about the life of the fabulous Cristóbal Balenciaga, be sure to check out Couture Culture: The Master of Us All, A New Biography of Balenciaga – a very STYLISH read for spring.
