Letitia Cotton

Letitia S. Cotton My love affair for style and fashion started at a very young age. Growing up in a small town observing out-dated and very similar hairstyles sparked my determination to do hair. It has been a pleasure of mine to build up a person’s confidence and add to their beauty by putting my hairstyling skills to work. I’ve worked with people who have lost their confidence because of hair loss, sickness, stress, etc. All of these misfortunes result in them seeking someone to help them through a very difficult situation. I like to believe I am that person that they seek. Meeting others with this same interest is where it became inevitable that this was what I needed to do. After graduating from high school, I got my cosmetology licenses at a local community college. While attending the community college, I apprenticed with an independent stylist. During this time, I shadowed the hairstylist her in the shop and was taught many techniques for hair care. I received education in Affirm, Kera Care and Mizani products. Upon graduating, I started apprenticing with Rusk educators on a daily basis. By choosing to work for the #1 salon in Raleigh, NC (Salon Blu), my education continued to grow. I assisted a Rusk educator, Jennifer Fincher, owner of Salon Blu, for ten months. I went through all the Rusk/Redken trainings and with the same mandatory bi-weekly classes for a year. Going through this intense training proved to me that this was my calling. I built my clientele in 3 years. During this time I became a Redken color specialist. I also received private classes through Salon Blu with educators such as Lea Freeman, Sam Villa, Giovanni, David Stanko, etc. I also received education in products such as L’oreal, Alterna, Redken, Rusk and Pureology. I am additionally certified in Brazilian blowouts. My education is constantly being updated throughout the year as the industry of hair updates and new styles become trendy. I am blessed to obtain the natural art of caring for hair. Picturing any other career can never be an option. I LOVE, LIVE, and breath HAIR!

Cady Childs

I am obsessed with frills, vintage pieces, and any sort of accessory, fabric, or adornment reminiscent of fairy tales. I realize this makes my style picks a bit 'girly' at times- I feel I make up for this with immense appreciation for Kurt Cobain's influence on Tori Spelling's wardrobe, as well as awesome taste in music.

Six years ago I was a member of Palmetto Girls State where I learned a lot about our SC government, now I am a SC Notary. A fun fact about myself is that I lived very briefly in Harlem, New York with my family when I was little and we would visit historic places like the Apollo Theater and tourist attractions like Midtown Manhattan and Time Square. Another fun fact about me is that I studied abroad spring 2015 in Dublin, Ireland and also interned with Metro Eireann newspaper under the leadership of Editor Mr. Chinedu. I tried Gelato, sushi, and fried ice cream for the first time in Ireland. I also had to get adjusted to the time difference as Dublin is 5 hours ahead of US. My long term goal is to land a traveling career within my field, writing/ reporting or broadcasting either with the Today Show or Good Morning America, writing for Essence Magazine, Huffington Post, or Washington Post and to obtain my MBA and start my own event-planning (most specifically a Christian wedding planning business), photography business, and a non-profit (to help young boys and girls in an effort to mentor and prepare them for high school college and career opportunities so that we reduce the number of incarcerations and violence that our young generation may face). I also want to write a child book series, and write a play or television show that would possibly get aired (creating my own production company would be nice but I don’t want to speak to soon) My plan B would be to pursue a career in the entertainment industry singing and acting. Some places that I would love to visit in my lifetime are: Hawaii, New Orleans, Puerto Rico, Boston Mass, Niagra Falls, Mexico, Canada, Paris, France, Switzerland, Thailand, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Scotland and Budapest. I love my family and friends and church family very dearly and cooking too. I also love the Carolina Panthers and Kevin Durant and reading novels written by authors Terry McMillan and J.K. Rowling. My favorite news reporters are: Tamron Hall, Lester Holt, Ann Curry, Katie Couric Robin Roberts, and Dan Rather and SC based Judi Gatson and Darci Strickland. A long term goal that I have is to move to Arlington or Richmond Virginia or LA, Athens, GA, Tennessee, or New York City to start my career and seek the best opportunities possible. I hope that you enjoy my published work as I truly appreciate the opportunity to write and intern for Carolina Style Mag it is such a fun, snazzy, magazine.

Katie McKiever exudes positive energy and is inherently altruistic. Born in Memphis, she hopped around the South and landed in Charlotte where she’s been for 8 years. Katie is an editor, a newlywed and a proud Plaza Midwood neighborhood resident. She holds a master’s degree in English from UNCG, has a love of words and diving deep into a good book. She finds great enjoyment in her volunteering activities, previously serving on the board of the Friends of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and is an active member of Hands on Charlotte’s Marketing and Communications Committee. Katie is an enthusiastic social media user and loves helping individuals and companies formulate a brand strategy. In her downtime, she works out and is a girl about town staying in the know with Charlotte’s social scene. Find her on Twitter @KatieMcKiever.
