Whether Staycay or Vacay —Think Charleston, SC for Your Next Getaway

Raise your hand if you’ve been spoiled by growing up in a destination city! Come on now, I know I’m not the only one— I’m looking at you New Yorkers, Las Vegans and Angelenos. Relax, I get it; avoiding the bumbling tourist is reason enough to stick to your ol’ faithfuls but I’m here to encourage you, and more specifically, my fellow Charlestonians to resist fleeing home for the weekend and plan your next getaway right here in town.

Where to Stay

As of late, Charleston has become not only a mecca for incredible dining but also charming boutique hotels. Joining the list of premiere luxury lodging is the Grand Bohemian Hotel Charleston, located downtown in the historic district at the corner of Wentworth and Meeting Street.

Capitalizing on the city’s rich history and thriving varied art scene, Kessler Collection properties prioritize the arts. At the center of most their real estate, including Grand Bohemian Charleston is an onsite art Gallery. The 1,100 square foot space is home to local, regional and internationally recognized artists who inspire the collector in all of us.

As a matter of fact the pieces that adorn the walls through out the hotel are for purchase but be sure to act fast because they’re frequently transitioned out.

Each room is decorated with a valued sense of simplicity at its core while utilizing and incorporating vibrant pops of accent decor. Encouraging the art to be the focal point in every room, Jeannie Green, corporate sales and catering manager at Kessler Collection fondly describes the property as a museum with bedrooms.

Eating + Dinning

Undoubtedly, while staying at the Grand Bohemian Charleston you’re given a wide array of culinary options by veteran chef Ryley McGillis. Whether you opt to spend your morning indulging in the comforts of your room while enjoying room service or decide to venture up to fourth floor to experience the Grand Bohemian Charleston’s principal roof top restaurant Élevé you’re in for a treat.

The coastal inspired cuisine and uniquely curated cocktails paired with the breathtaking view of a city scape that evokes something of a religious experience — welcome to the Holy City.

When you finally decide to peal yourself out of the luxury that is your bedroom and come to terms with the fact that though quite possible —eating every meal within the confines of The Grand Bohemian might not be the best way to explore the city you’re vacationing in.

Since you’ll be surrounded and I do mean literally surrounded by some of the best restaurants above and below the Mason Dixon line, it helps to maybe have a couple eateries in mind beforehand.  Though flying by the seat of your pants works too, it doesn’t hurt to do a little research. If you’re still stumped, follow the trail of restaurants created by well established chefs like The Ordinary and Artisan Meat Share. As the brain child of FIG’s Mike Lata and Adam Nemirow, The Ordinary was simply pitched as an oyster hall but quickly exceeded expectations of the average raw bar motif. As for Artisan Meat Share, there was great anticipation for its opening back in 2014 due to the raving reviews, Cypress Chef Craig Deihl was receiving surrounding his charcuterie program. Both restaurants have found a way to take your staple proteins and turn em up a notch.

What to Do

It’s always nice to be pleasantly surprised. Fortunately, I can say this was my experience while channeling my inner tourist. Old South Carriage Company  has an amazing and knowledgable staff. As a native I was a bit apprehensive about how the Charleston narrative would be painted for visiting patrons. However, my uneasiness quickly dissipated as I listened to the engaging tales wrapped in mystic veils of truth more transparent than the ghost thought to haunt many of the cities historic buildings.

Strolling the city by horse and carriage offers a notable glimpse of the city that everyone should take advantage of.

If you prefer spirits of a different kind then maybe a wine tasting or a distillery tour is more your speed. Between the many breweries/distilleries and the Grand Bohemian’s distinct offering to blend your own wine there’s no shortage of chances to wet your whistle.

The wine blending course allows for a one of a kind parting gift. Once you’ve concocted your signature flavor Grand Bo’s seasoned staff and sommeliers will assist you in the bottling process. If you’re feeling extra creative design and/or send a personal image to the staff via email.
