Who Will Return from the Red Carpet with a 2016 Emmy Award?

Who Will Return from the Red Carpet with a 2016 Emmy Award?

With so many heavy hitters at this year’s Emmy Awards, it’s going to be hard to narrow down the voting to a select few – but how about the betting? It doesn’t get any easier when trying to decipher the odds for Outstanding Drama or Comedy Series, not mention Best Actor or Actress for each. There’s a battle that is almost as appealing as the awards themselves brewing though and it’s for Outstanding Actor in a Drama.

The unofficial slogan for this year’s Emmy rendition should read “Newcomers and Farewells”. There’s quite a few shows on the way in and quite a few tremendous traditions on their way out. Mr. Robot, Narcos and The Night Manager come to mind as freshmen. Meanwhile, The Good Wife and Downton Abbey will sadly be making their final appearance. With that said, some of the best battles will be between old classics and new blood. An excellent example is House of Cards versus Mr. Robot. Las Vegas odds give the edge to Kevin Spacey, but don’t be surprised if Rami Malek wins for his portrayal of tortured hacker Elliot Alderson.

A few other notable names in the category are Matthew Rhys, Bob Odenkirk, Kyle Chandler and Leiv Schreiber. Rhy with The Americans is ranked right behind the favored Spacey in the category, he’s then followed by Malek and Bob Odenkirk from Better Call Saul. Odenkirk made a name for himself portraying the slippery attorney Saul Goodman in the heralded drama Breaking Bad and is now making his first appearance in a lead role. Filling out the genre are Kyle Chandler with Bloodline and underdog Leiv Schreiber, who has already won a SAG, Satellite and Independent Spirit Award for his work in Spotlight this year.

All signs are pointing to a Spacey win, but it’ll be by a narrow margin according to most polls. Other tight races to keep an eye on include Game of Thrones versus Mr. Robot for Outstanding Drama Series, Jeffrey Tambor versus Aziz Ansari for Best Comedic Actor and Julia Louis-Dreyfus versus Ellie Kemper for top Comedic Actress.

It’s not often that the favorites go home empty handed but we have seen some upsets in the past. With this level of talent on the red carpet as well, 2016 could certainly be another thrilling and surprising year.
