Carolina Fashion Designers: House of Raggedy Anne Debuts at Fashion Freestyle

Davita Galloway is one half the duo at Dupp & Swat, the creative studio  in the heart of Charlotte’s NoDa area. Only three years old, Dupp & Swat began as a fashion boutique where local designers could sell their collections.  Now so much more, the space houses a photo studio, hair salon and hosts pop up shops, socials, community town hall meetings and is the home of the popular magazine fashion and culture magazine, The Spread.

Now Galloway is launching her newest creative project, House of Raggedy Anne, an edgy and funky fashion collection for men and women. We stopped in at Dupp & Swat to get the scoop on her new collection, which debuts at the Fashion Freestyle event on October 10 during the Breaking Convention.

You’ve run a successful boutique for quite some time. When did you decide you wanted to take the step into fashion design?
Truth be told, the idea of designing has always been in the works. I distinctly remember sketching apparel at a young age and creating suitable names for the collection. I’ve taken numerous sewing classes and, actually, before my brother and I opened dupp&swat, I attended Parsons School of Design, so this isn’t anything new. Because we have our hands in a variety of projects/initiatives/etc, it just took a little time to make it real. Luckily, we’re patient.

Tell us about the collection you are designing for the Fashion Freestyle event.
The collection is entitled ‘Black Mass.’ Aesthetically, it’s on the other end of the spectrum for me as I’m, typically, adorned in colorful selections. With this collection, the idea is to make a strong and bold, yet soft and beautiful statement. As hip hop encompasses the same elements, it should be a dynamic union.

Who is your fashion line primarily for? Men? Women? Tell us about him/her.  I think men and women should dress how they feel and with that said, I’m designing more for personality. Feeling edgy and funky? Got that! Is it one of those days, and you’re feeling quite the ‘minimalist?’ No worries! Need to make a statement when you walk into the room? This way please! Looking for that special piece you know everyone won’t have? Welcome!

When we stopped in your boutique, you were in the process of finishing wardrobe for a production here in Charlotte. Tell us about the production and the wardrobe you designed?
Oh yes, the wardrobe was for an Opera Carolina/Opera Xpress production entitled, ‘How Nanita Learned to Make Flan,’ directed by April Turner. It’s a fantasy tale touring Elementary Schools with quite a few colorful characters.

If you could style any celebrity in your clothes, who would it be?
Rihanna! Hands down!

Tell us about your personal style.
All over the place, unfinished at times, colorful and ‘different’–or at least that’s what people tell me.

What is one stylish accessory you cannot live without?
Eyewear, earrings and a bag! I know you said one but…

Your MUST HAVE item for fall is….?
Cardigans, cardigans, cardigans.

What is the key to having great personal style.
Confidence. I believe that if you have sense of self, you’re unbothered by what others are doing, stylistically.

Want to see the debut of House of Raggedy Anne? Save the date for October 10. Galloway is showing her collection at the Fashion Freestyle event scheduled to take place from 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. at Spirit Square in conjunction with the Breaking Convention.  Follow the Breaking Convention in Charlotte on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Fashion Freestyle is free and open to the public.
