Did you hear about the radio station in Charlotte playing only Drake? Odd right? Especially since it was a gospel station before Drake took over? Now we know why.
On the eve of its announcement, Radio One Charlotte generated “buzz” with three-days of commercial free, 24-7 Hip-Hop music from Drake on its rebranded station – Drake 92.7 FM. Today, Radio One announced its new permanent mainstream urban format – 92.7 THE BLOCK, Charlotte’s Non-Stop Hip Hop and R&B Station.
Last week, Radio One Charlotte announced that its PRAISE inspirational music simulcast on 92.7 FM was going away. With over two thirds of its listeners accessing the PRAISE station on 100.9 FM, the station saw an opportunity to grow its footprint and launch a new format on 92.7 FM.
Then at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14th listeners were introduced to Drake 92.7 with his hit, “0 to 100.”
Yesterday at 5:00 p.m. 92.7 THE BLOCK was introduced to the newest member of the Radio One Charlotte cluster of WOSF Old School 105.3 and WPZS Praise 100.9 with its first five on the playlist, “Tha Block is Hot” by Lil’ Wayne, “Power Trip” by J Cole, “We In Da City” by Young Dro, “My Way” by Fetty Wap/Drake and “Planes” by Jeremih/J Cole.
Mary K, Programming Director, Radio One Charlotte said, “This stunt was big fun! It gave us the opportunity to honor an amazing artist with an equally outstanding body of work, while drawing a lot of attention to the station. All weekend the excitement was building with so many people speculating on the next steps for the frequency. Well, THE BLOCK is here and I’m thrilled about our future plans. You haven’t seen anything yet!”
92.7 The BLOCK promises it’s listeners can expect to hear all the new music from Drake, Nicki Minaj, J Cole, Future, J. Cole and other great Hip Hop and R&B artists.
Sorry Drake fans. You won’t hear Drake back to back on this radio station…or maybe you will.
