Cupcrazed Gets Cold Brew Crazy With JoeTap
If the Big Bang Theorgy gang were to go out for bold brew coffee, they would probably make the trip to Fort Mill for this coffee meets science treat. Nitrogen is now on tap at Cupcrazed Cupcakery.
Known for inventive, creative baking and multiple Food Network appearances, Cupcrazed Cupcakery is the lone Carolinas purveyor of JoeTap, a cold brew coffee dispenser that infuses the caffeinated drink with nitrogen, which makes the drink taste as if cream and sugar has been added.
“Passionate coffee drinkers — and beer drinkers — have been flooding in the store, anxious to give JoeTap a try,” says Cupcrazed owner Heather McDonnell. “It’s pretty awesome to be able to share this delicious science with everyone; to have this rich, sweet, creamy coffee without adding sugar and cream.” Cupcrazed is selling JoeTap coffee for $3.25 for a 12 oz. cup.
JoeTap, which debuted at the Speciality Coffee Association of America gathering in April in Seattle, is garnering buzz quickly, grabbing the attention of Eater, Food and Wine Magazine and The Washington Post, among other media outlets.
So here is where the science comes in. JoeTap inventor Charles Kleinrichert told The Washington Post that his patent-pending system breaks down the nitrogen into microscopic bubbles and then mixes the gas into the cold-brew coffee via a special infuser. As those microscopic nitrogen bubbles open up and pop, they “can absolutely bring out some flavors that you wouldn’t normally get,” Kleinrichert said, “You’re creating unique new flavors that were never found in coffee previously.”
