As the Tables Turn: Tavern and Table Preview
Shem Creek is known for its beautiful views and fun atmosphere, but when you bring elegance into the equation, it then becomes the best of both worlds. The style and presentation of Tavern and Table, Shem Creek’s newest hot spot, is one of a kind. Executive Chef, Katie Lorenzen-Smith, has created an inovative menu, combining southern staples with modern flavors to create a truly unique taste. They offer food for all pallets, from fancy charcuteries to down south pork rinds. The restaurant also strives to keep their products as local as possible, using over 15 different local vendors, fisherman and farmers. Keeping with the Shem Creek happy hour scene, it boasts an indoor and outdoor bar, so you’ll never be thirsty! My evening spent at Tavern and Table for their sneak peek tasting event was filled with smiles and laughter, definitely making it one for the books!
I knew it was going to be a good night when as soon as I walked in there was a snack table set up with small treats and goodies for you to take home. The most popular of these was the Heirloom popcorn. I mean, who wouldn’t like popcorn with bacon, caramel and peanuts? This was only the beginning of my delicious experience!
Throughout the night there were many dishes served, and everything was cooked to perfection. I couldn’t have done it better myself (and I’m a cook too). They kicked things off with a bang featuring the Juicy Lucy Burger (pictured). Made with house ground beef and topped with american cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, b&b pickles and served on a brioche bun with duck fat fries, this was NOT just an ordinary burger. This is a burger meant for the good at heart and it sure made it’s way to mine!
After the beef burger came the equally delicious Turkey Burger. As with everything at Tavern and Table, this wasn’t your average turkey burger. It was topped with roasted red pepper, avocado, cabot habañero cheese and served on a whole wheat bun, complete with of course, duck fat fries. Then, they brought out an assortment of flatbreads- duck confit and fried egg as well as house made sausage! Perfect after a happy hour afternoon at the outside bar. Speaking of cocktails, there was no shortage of drinks to help down these delicious bites! From the Rosemary Grapefruit Collins to the Clementine Daisy Fresno, they were all mixed to perfection and as pretty as they were yummy.
Now, it wouldn’t be a Shem Creek restaurant if there wasn’t some seafood involved! We were next given their take on “scallops and grits” with pan seared scallops, served over grits and topped with Spanish chorizo, Moroccan sauce and tomato jam. Then, came the fire roasted oysters, cooked with spinach, sausage and a ginger aioli. This definitely isn’t your average fried seafood restaurant!
This restaurant is a great example of what happens when great minds come together to create a beautiful and in this case, delectable, thing! I am proud to say that attending this tasting event wasn’t just beneficial for my belly, but I also landed a job working alongside of Executive Chef, Katie, as her pastry chef! So, when you go in to try Tavern and Table, know that I might be behind that delicious dish you’re enjoying!
