Fashion Flashback: Oberima Afriyie, Up Close and Personal

By  |

Ghanaian born and American bred designer, AfriyiePoku, was the winner of Charleston Fashion Week’s Emerging Designer Contest in 2013. Now back for a second season in 2014 as one of the featured designers, we were invited to view his collection at Tivoli during a special off the runway encore presentation.

Charleston Fashion Week’s creator Ayoka Lucas was in attendance as well as fashion’s beloved mentor and creator of Fashion Week in NYC, Fern Mallis.

The menswear collection was inspired by Asian warrior influence as evidenced by pleating detail and military like structure in most of the collection’s looks. His manifesto states the Oberima Afriyie brand approaches every design by creating a character that is defined by Poku’s philosophy of “the Gentleman.”
