Carolina STYLE: Tell us a little about yourself and your line.
Alyssa Nicole: My name is Alyssa and I am the designer behind Alyssa Nicole. My focus for Alyssa Nicole is to design collections that embody an element of exclusivity and high quality. I strive to design garments that span from professional to play while embodying true elements of femininity.
When did you first learn to sew?
I taught myself how to sew when I was 12. I began designing handbags and designed my first line for Alyssa Nicole when I was 16.
How did you first know your true passion was designing clothes?
I decided to pursue a career in fashion when I started designing and selling dresses to my friends and family.
What are your influences for design ideas?
A lot of things inspire my collections but I generally start my design process with a mood or feeling attached to a color palette and work off of classic silhouettes that I really enjoy [wearing].
Do you use any special dyeing techniques?
Sometimes we dye in house – we had an ombre chiffon party dress that was hand dyed. It just depends on the season.
Why is it important for your garments to be made in the USA?
Our line is produced in the USA. I design everything in San Francisco and it’s really important to me that everything we produce is carefully crafted, which is why we decided to produce locally. I don’t do fast fashion. I just want to ensure my customers that I am working on the line every step of the [way] from designing to production and producing the line locally gives me the ability to do that.
Which celebrity’s style have you fallen in love with?
I really like Alexa Chung’s style. Her style is ladylike and really cool at the same time.
Blogging is such a huge deal, and you also have a blog to accompany your line. Do you have any favorite bloggers that you follow?
My favorite blog is Man Repeller. Leandra is hilarious and I love her style.
Do you think you will ever open an Alyssa Nicole boutique?
It’s definitely on my list of things to do – it’s always been a dream of mine.
Do you attend any fashion weeks in the nation? (like New York Fashion Week or Charleston Fashion Week?)
I rarely ever attend any events because I spend a majority of my time working on the line – I am usually backstage at fashion shows but I would totally love to see and enjoy a show!
Any tips for future designers who are still learning the process?
Stay true to your aesthetic and know that working in this industry takes a lot of hard work and persistence.
