There are two announcements that will always get us excited: a new place to shop and a new place to eat.
Rocco Whalen of Food Network Star announced the opening of his new 8,600 square foot restaurant, Fahrenheit, at SKYE Condominiums (222 South Caldwell Street). This will be Charlotte’s first and only rooftop restaurant, located on the 21st floor of the mixed-used development.
“I am beyond excited to be opening Fahrenheit in Charlotte. I have met many people in Charlotte, both in the culinary scene and residents throughout the city, who have been extremely welcoming,” says Chef Rocco. “Charlotte is absolutely the best place for the second location of Fahrenheit. The energy of this city is amazing,” continues Whalen.
The menu focuses on American regional cuisine, with Mediterranean and Asian accents, and incorporates local, seasonal and sustainable ingredients. Whalen has developed relationships with Meat & Fish Company, Cloister Honey, Tega Hills Farm and other Carolina purveyors.
So just what can you expect when dining at Fahrenheit? How about Sweet Potato Biscuits with Lobster & Neese’s Country Sausage Gravy; Charlotte Nachos- Crispy Fried Potato Chips, lacquered with Fondue, Bacon, Herbs, & Parmesan ™; Coffee & Mustard Crusted Pork, Whipped Sweets, Malabar Spinach, Macadamia-Maple Reduction; American Kobe Beef Short Ribs, teriyaki lo-mien, apple-soy Glaze. Hungry yet?
Fahrenheit Charlotte is designed with an open floor concept and features distressed wood tables, quartz columns, modern light fixtures and private dining facilities with the latest technology with seating for 60. A spectacular ceiling mural of the Fahrenheit logo greets guests as they step off the elevator onto the 21st floor. The “sky bar” is one of the focal points of the restaurant, featuring glass walls that open up to the roof area with spectacular 360- degree views of Center City Charlotte. INTEC Group is the designer on the project.
A rooftop garden will grow a substantial amount of the restaurant’s specialty herbs, including lemon-thyme and Thai basil. Outdoor linear fire pits surrounding the restaurant add to the immediate experience of the panoramic views.
Fahrenheit Charlotte will be open daily for dinner beginning at 4:00pm and will host many specialty events on location and throughout the community. Slated are Food Network Cookbook Dinners, where guests will receive a signed copy of the featured Chef’s cookbook and Food Truck events, featuring specialty recipes, celebrity guests and local food purveyors. The restaurant is participating in the 25th Anniversary of Charlotte Wine & Food Weekend 2014 with a Vintner Dinner, paired with Bure Family Wines on Thursday, April 24.
Whalen starred in the Food Network documentary series, “The Fat Chef” in 2012, profiling a chef’s struggle with weight while working in the food industry. He lost over 100 pounds and will tell you he feels better than ever. He subsequently added “Fahren-Lite®” items to his restaurant menus which offers patrons reduced calorie options with healthy fats and without sacrificing the flavor.
A Wolfgang Puck protégé, Whalen, opened Fahrenheit Cleveland in May 2002.
