The much anticipated convergence of music, film, and interactive news is right around the corner! From March 8th-17th, Austin, Texas will be abuzz with people from all over the nation listening to music, screening films, and learning about the latest trends in interactive media from industry professionals and up-and-comers alike.
South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival (SXSW) first began in 1987. Austin was a booming city with a unique music scene that took influences from the city’s history and incorporated a wide array of musical genres covering country, jazz, blues, rock, and more. However, local musicians and artists in the heart of Texas, were unable to reach the rest of the world. SXSW was created to spread global awareness of Austin’s music scene and bring people into the city.
“SXSW’s original goal was to create an event that would act as a tool for creative people and the companies they work with to develop their careers, to bring together people from a wide area to meet and share ideas. That continues to be the goal today whether it is music, film or the internet. And Austin continues to be the perfect location.” [sxsw.com]
The music event was a huge success, and as the city grew, other companies began to play a role in the community. So in 1994, SXSW added the film and interactive aspects that are still going strong today, and proving to be a tremendous addition.
This year there will be screenings of films in 17 different categories including Documentary Spotlights and Narrative Shorts, as well as popular headliners like “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” with an all-star cast: Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Olivia Wilde, Alan Arkin, James Gandolfini and Jim Carrey. “Spring Breakers” with James Franco, Selena Gomez, and Vanessa Hudgens will also be screened. This extraordinary event also offers an opportunity for Texas High School students in their own category, Texas High School Shorts. Students submitted 5 minute shorts to be screened during SXSW and provide a glimpse into the future of filmmaking in Texas.
North Carolina based soul/rock singer and songwriter, Jason Adamo, is amongst the talented musical acts to be performing in Austin this year. Blessed with a soulful voice and tremendous writing ability, Jason has crafted his music into an uplifting, fresh, and nostalgic offering to those that came before him.
Carolina STYLE Magazine: Is this your first time performing at something of this magnitude? How does it feel?
Jason Adamo: This is our first time performing at SXSW, but we’ve had the honor and privilege of being invited to play several other conferences including The NAMM Conference in Los Angeles the last 4 years. SXSW is a conference I’ve always wanted to perform at and I’m very excited to bring the Jason Adamo Band there next week!
CSM: What is the process of being added to the lineup like?
JA: We’ve been invited to perform at The All Together Now Showcase (www.atnshowcase.com). I found out about this 9th annual showcase through our publicist Laura Goldfarb of Red Boot Publicity. She has worked with several other clients who have performed at this showcase in the past and when ATN opened the submissions process up for 2013, Laura sent us the link to submit. A few weeks later, we received an invite to play along with 47 other acts, from all over the country, over 3 days during SXSW at The Bayou Lounge.
CSM: What are you most looking forward to about performing at South by Southwest?
JA: SXSW is a HUGE networking arena, so we’re looking forward to meeting tons of folks in the music industry, Management Companies, Record Label Reps, other amazing bands.
CSM: Will you be sticking around for a few days to enjoy other acts?
JA: Unfortunately we only have 3 days to hang in Austin on this trip, as we have to return to NC to perform some shows at the end of the week. But we do hope to catch some of our fellow North Carolina based acts who have been invited to perform, as well as exploring a few venues up and down 6th street to discover some new talent!
Catch The Jason Adamo Band at The Bayou Lounge (500 6th Street) on Wednesday, March 13th at 9:30 PM.
