The Bull City gets “reFASHIONED”

This past Thursday, Motorco Music Hall played host to the Bull City’s first annual “reFASHIONED” show presented by dtownMARKET.  The runway exhibition honored some of the emerging talents and designers that signify style in the Carolinas. Ten local designers (including six fashion designers and four graphic-print & t-shirt designers) showcased their eclectic pieces and enjoyed the opportunity to expand brand exposure.

dtownMARKET organizer Kala Wolfe wanted to organize an event that brought together the local fashion talent and “gives struggling designers a platform to show what they’re really capable of.” Not only was this event fashionable, but it was also learning towards being green; the term “refashioned,” used regularly during the event, stems from the use of discarded, found, and, vintage materials in recycling and refurbishing to create garments or pieces. Many of the garments and items for sale were eco-friendly

Clothing line Gypsy Witch, likes to “rip ’em up and put them back together,” using unraveled sweaters to create their trendy designs. Symbology uses “textiles from countries where women are may be losing their traditional artisan talents” and “gives them fair-trade for their materials.” Gabriel En-Goetz of street-wear brand ‘Runaway Design’ sees Durham as an “up and coming” contender in the Carolina fashion scene. While the motto of his brand is “run from convention,” his designs are inspired by life and death.

Designers such as Belindabilly, Johnny Swank, Nyla Elise, Rocket Betty, Runaway Clothes, Symbology Clothes, and more, were present at the open market following the show providing attendees with the opportunity to purchase some of the pieces straight off the runway.

The Real Laww, Winner of  “Video of the year” at the 2012 Carolina Music Awards, was the master of ceremonies and the show was followed by a raffle benefitting Dress for Success.
