The 5th annual Carolina Music Awards took place at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh. The biggest night for music in the Carolinas took place Sunday July 15th, recognizing and honoring artists who represent a range of genres. Despite soaring temperatures, the Red Carpet frenzy continued to the sounds of the Nick Driver Band. While the focus for the night was music, the creativity and talent could also be traced in the trends of fashion.
Attendees also had a chance to mingle with a few local designers, truly linking the fashion and music talent that the Carolinas have to offer. Claire Stanhope and Katherine Perretta, owners of Orchard Grey, were among the designers who were there to showcase their pieces. The North Carolina natives started their company about a year ago, and design and create all of their handcrafted jewelry in the state’s capital. Inspired by Claire’s degree in Sustainable Natural Resources, they use 100% sustainable products including natural, vintage, and recycled elements. Rebecca Lakey and Demian Dellinger of Fan Feet, were also there to display their Fan-tastic footwear.
The creative expression transcended the musical talent as stylish nominees, fans, and presenters walked the Red Carpet exhibiting Summer and Fall trends such as neon, tribal patterns, waistcoats, and ombré.
Above, top left: We were instantly drawn to model Ursula Ajeroh’s colorful ensemble. Ursula told us that she “picked a color for the season, not a brand” when deciding what to wear to the musical event. Her tribal patterned purse added a boho chic look to the coral jumpsuit, combining two of the Summer’s hottest trends.
Above, top right: The gradation of color know as “Ombré” is a trend that has been around for a few seasons now. Most recently, examples of the trend could be seen on the Fall 2012 Haute Couture runways in Paris. This blue ombré dress is a perfect way to incorporate the vivid Summer colors with the soft transition between shades that is ombré.
Above, bottom left: Waistcoats were a big hit at the award ceremony with a variety of styles being strutted down the Red Carpet. Baggy or fitted, over a t-shirt or button-down, denim or fur, the waistcoat got a lot of airtime. The waistcoat first reemerged back in Spring 2011 and has become one of the most popular trends for men. We love how the clean lines on this pin-stripe waistcoat frame the rest of the outfit.
Above, bottom right: Neon was hands down the winner when it came to trends of the evening! Vibrant colors could be seen all down the Red Carpet. Stars embraced the trend that is reminiscent of the 80s in many different ways; from eye-popping accessories to bursts of colorful t-shirts.
Below: Ms. Shoney, nominated for Best Hip Hop Female for the second time, looked stunning in this neon pink jumpsuit that was nicely set off with her gold accessories. Flashes of the Fall 2012 gold trend that we saw at New York Fashion Week back in February could be seen on many of attendees. It was clear that they were clued into the trend that we will see a lot more of in the coming months.
Below: Best Country Male winner Erik Smallwood’s wife Hannah stepped out in a dazzling sequin dress. She topped off the look with her choice of accessories. The mother-of-pearl bracelet, perfectly paired with new and vintage rings, brings effortless chic to this summer look.
Below: AB Da Best & Rizio, are not only musically talented (nominated for Hip Hop Band of the year) but they also design their own outfits. Integrating the summer neon craze, in rolled up yellow pants, and the wild textures for Fall, with brown suede dress shoes and a fur vest, the duo were honing in on their talents on and off the stage.
Creative expression was not limited to the stage, nominees, or performers. The Red Carpet was illuminated with an array of current trends, as well as a glimpse of what’s to come. Congratulations to all of the winners and nominees, and of course Omar McCallop on a great event. We leave you with our pick of the Best Dressed from the 2012 Carolina Music Awards.
